Commission Selects Director of Engineering Design
Port veteran Jim Santa Ana will lead new division

The Board of Harbor Commissioners has appointed Jim Santa Ana to the newly created post of Director of Engineering Design at the Port of Long Beach.

Santa Ana, who joined the Port in 1999, will lead a new division integral to development and renovation at the Port. The division produces technical reports, studies, plans and specifications for construction projects involving terminals, wharves, roadway and bridges, harbors and other facilities. Santa Ana will be responsible for managing multiple Port in-house design projects and studies.

The action by the Harbor Commission is part of an ongoing reorganization of the Port¡¦s Engineering Bureau and other Port divisions.

Santa Ana, who has been serving as the Port¡¦s Deputy Chief Harbor Engineer of Design, has more than 26 years of experience in port engineering. Before coming to Long Beach, he worked for 19 years at the Port of Los Angeles, serving as the Terminal Project Section Leader at the time of his departure.

With his experience, Santa Ana has been involved in many of the major developments at both ports over the years, such as improvements to the Pier G terminal in Long Beach, and projects at the American President Lines, Matson, Evergreen and Yang Ming terminals in San Pedro.

Santa Ana is a graduate of California State University, Los Angeles. He is the Port¡¦s representative to the American Society of Civil Engineers Technical Council of Lifeline Earthquake Engineering and the Western Ports Engineering Committee. He is also a member of the American Public Works .
